Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS)

The goal of Foster Elementary School is to provide a safe and productive learning environment for all individuals. Each member of the school community is responsible for behavior that exhibits respect for human dignity and individual differences. All students and staff share the responsibility of maintaining a safe climate that promotes and encourages learning.
In the 2009-2010 school year, Foster implemented the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program. This program is designed to teach the desired behaviors throughout the many areas of the school campus. Through specific teachings of these behaviors at the beginning of the year and weekly instruction focused on behaviors and related social skills, Foster aims to assist students in consistently meeting those desired behaviors.
Parental reinforcement of behavioral expectations is a vital component of a safe, caring environment. Your continues support of this program is greatly appreciated.

PBIS is a systemic approach to proactive, school-wide discipline based on a RtI model. PBIS applies evidence-based programs, practices and strategies for all students to increase academic performance, improve safety, decrease problem behavior, and establish a positive school culture.

The PBIS model has been successfully implemented in thousands of schools in over 40 states, resulting in dramatic reductions in disciplinary interventions and increases in academic achievement. Data-based decision making is a hallmark of PBIS, allowing successes to be easily shared with all relevant stakeholders.

Foster students are soaring with pride as they proudly demonstrate many positive behaviors on their way to being Responsible, Respectful, and Safe in all learning environments.

Teaching behavior expectations through PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) affords all students the initial instruction and on-going support they need to be Responsible, Respectful, and Safe every day in every way.

Students are recognized with Falcon Feathers as they demonstrate positive behaviors. These feathers serve to reinforce and solidify the positive behavior; the feathers are an extrinsic way to recognize the intrinsic motivation that is developing within students to always be Responsible, Respectful, and Safe.

Additionally, the feathers can be used as “currency” in our token economy as students shop the school store each week for everything from school supplies to specialty items.
